Walking Day 11

10-7-2019   Ribadeo to Villamartin Grande/Lourenza

Sunrise from EO Hotel looking over the Ribadeo river which is the border between Asturias and Galicia.  Now headed up into the mountains.

I think we are walking almost to the top of that hill.

Up, up and around then down and up some more.

Now we are so high you can see the ocean where the Cathedral Beach is.  We are now walking Southwest.

Absolutely the most gorgeous farmland.  All day listening to corn harvesters chopping corn for silage.  Passing by large Holstein herds with big milking barns.

The last hill to climb today as Villamartin Grande is at the top.  Feeling like I can nearly make it.   Finally there we were delighted to see old friends sitting at the Albergue resting at an outside table. Al goes to checkin but they are full, even though we thought we had reservations.  The very nice girl there also told us that the place 2k further to stay was closed for the season and the next one 4k further was full.  Well looking at walking another 8 km at 4:00 in the afternoon  was beyond me so when she offered to call a taxi to take us to the next bigger town where we’d have more options I Jumped at the chance.  You can’t be a purist when your “old”.

Jose and Alexandria who have been walking for 3 months from their home in France.   I think this is the 3rd or 4th time we have run into them.  They were walking on so we may meet up with them again.

The taxi took us straight to the center of town which was only a short walk to a public Albergue .

Just missed the Bean Festival.

Here is our place for the night.  6 Euros per person, 5 bunks in a room, 3 rooms on 2 floors.  Showers and heads on first floor only.  No food but mini kitchen to cook.

After picking our bunks showers and hanging clothes to dry we went in search of food...a typical pilgrim menu.  Simple foods,  I think we’d starve if it weren’t for potatoes.  That is a filet of pork.  A serving is maybe 2 1/2 ozs.
